Church Conducts Medical Camp in Pensiangan

KOTA KINABALU: More than 400 rural villagers in faraway Pensiangan district in interior Sabah benefited from a medical camp organised by the Glory Christian Centre (GCC) on August 20-21.

 

The camp, conducted by 15 volunteers of GCC from here, also included educational activities aside from health talks and oral cancer screening. It was organized as a joint project with the Sabah Health Department.

 

The project in Kampung Santukan, about six hours drive from here, was the second in Pensiangan, an area populated by largely Murut farmers. Villagers from four other surrounding villages also benefited from the activity which is part of the “Hands of Love” activities under GCC’s Community Care program.

 

The GCC team last visited Kampung Salung in Pensiangan in October 2010. The team has also visited several other rural villages in Sabah in the past few years.

 

“Our aim is to find a need in the community and fill it because more than 50 per cent of Sabah’s population are in the rural areas and are in need of our help,” said a Community Care spokesperson.

 

According to Dr Yusuf Ibrahim, director of Sabah Health Department, the government is working towards a “One School One Clinic” strategy (for each village) within the 10th and 11th Malaysian Plans to provide basic medical services to the rural folks who have either no or very limited access to health facilities.

 

“It is only meaningful to do our part as caring Malaysians,” the spokesperson said.

 

GCC is a local independent church founded 17 years ago. The church is located in the Damai commercial area here and has more than 1,500 worshipers.
